Assurant Health & Healthcare Reform

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Assurant Health is one of the top health insurance companies in the United States, insuring over a million people.  As a leading insurer of individuals, families, and small employers Assurant has its own stance on the health care reform topic that seems to be on everyone’s minds lately.  This comes from their Newsroom article “Assurant Health: Our View on Healthcare Reform.”  Assurant Health believes that Americans should have a better health care system.  They are a member of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), a group working towards effective health care reform.

While Assurant believes strongly that health care reform is a critical necessity, they don’t think the government alone should be changing everything.  They would like to see the policy makers work with health insurers, doctors, patients, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and medical supply companies to share in the reform efforts.  Assurant Health would like to see all income levels and health conditions covered by high quality and affordable health care.  They believe a competitive marketplace is the best way to achieve this health care reform.

UPMC & Senate Health Care Bill Victory for Obama

Friday, December 25th, 2009

According to “Senate OK’s health care bill in victory for Obama,” Democrats brought President Obama an early Christmas present by passing the health care legislation.  The AP article by David Espo points out that the 60-39 vote was “strictly along party lines.”  This passage allows for the Senate and House to begin talks about this health care plan to help reduce the number of uninsured Americans and bring some control over the insurance industry.  Obama is hopeful that this health insurance reform job will be completed shortly.

What does this mean for health insurance companies like UPMC in Western Pennsylvania?  Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the likely passage of this health care reform by early next year will provide “affordability for the middle class, security for our seniors, responsibility to our children by reducing the deficit, and accountability for the insurance industry.”  Both the House and Senate bills have many facets that will need to be combined into a working system for the United States, but President Obama ensures Americans that they will only be helped by this health care reform.

Compare Health Insurance From Aultcare So You’re Covered

Friday, December 18th, 2009

There are over 45 million Americans living without healthcare, according to the USA Today article “More that 45 million Americans now lack health insurance” by Robert Preidt.  That is a full 15% of our population without health insurance according to this National Health Interview Survey.  NHIS has been collecting data since 1957 and it is used to monitor health trends across the United States.  Aultcare, a healthcare provider in Ohio, seeks to help lower the number of uninsured Americans with their focus on profitability for employers and attractive health plans for employees.

Nearly 20% of the survey participants had been uninsured for at least part of the last year while close to 11% had been uninsured for more than a year.  There are so many children included in the number of uninsured Americans that it is heartbreaking.  Over 12% of poor children and close to 12% of near-poor children are not covered by any health insurance.  With the government working hard on a health insurance plan for the nation, Americans can be hopeful that they’ll be able to compare health insurance to find a good plan for their family.  Getting Americans healthcare coverage should be a top priority.

UPMC Sponsors Pittsburgh Half Marathon

Friday, December 11th, 2009

UPMC Health Plan is now the title sponsor for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon, according to their press release “As Registration Numbers Climb Steadily, UPMC Health Plan Becomes Title Sponsor for Pittsburgh Half Marathon.  The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon will be run May 2, 2010.  Dick’s Sporting Goods has already signed on as the Marathon title sponsor and FedEx Ground is sponsoring the Marathon Relay.  The Marathon Race director expressed gratitude to the sponsors helping to maintain this non-profit community based event.

Early registration numbers are five times greater than last year, a sign that this could be one of the biggest Marathons that Pittsburgh has seen.  UPMC health insurance plans promote healthy living and fitness so this is a great match for sponsorship.  As the second largest insurance provider in Western Pennsylvania, UPMC Health Plan can influence a lot of people to live a healthier lifestyle.  Training for a half marathon, whether running or walking, is a great way to do just that.

Golden Rule Health Insurance Parent Company Acquires Health Net

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

According to “UnitedHealthCare’s Acquisition of Health Net Approved” by Matthew Sturdevant of The Hartford Courant, Health Net is now part of UnitedHealthCare.  Oxford and Golden Rule health insurance are included in the UnitedHealthCare group.  They bid on the rights to renew the memberships of all Health Net customers in Connecticut and their bid was approved this week.  Connecticut now has 5 major health care providers instead of 6, which has drawn some opposition from physician organizations.  They bring up the concern of fewer options for insurance providers leading to an increase in the cost for both treatments and medicine.  But UnitedHealthCare says that they plan to expand both the choices and access to care for Health Net customers and that Connecticut is a competitive market so cost will remain in line with that.

Golden Rule insurance is part of UnitedHealthCare.  They are proud to offer individualized plans customized for each member’s circumstances including coverage like maternity benefits, prescription drug cards, term life plans, and supplemental accident benefits.  With UnitedHealthCare’s acquisition of Health Net, Health Net should have similar programs to Golden Rule health insurance and Oxford insurance.  This will also help them remain the second largest insurance provider in the state.  Customers can compare health insurance from all available providers to find which company suits them the best.  The Connecticut Insurance Department monitors all insurance providers and will closely watch to ensure that Health Net’s customers receive excellent care from their new provider.
