What Would UPMC Health Insurance Think of Pregnant Olympian?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

pregnant bellyOne of Canada’s Olympic hopefuls is 5 1/2 months pregnant, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Chase.  Kristie Moore is a 30 year old member of Canada’s curling team.  She is only the third known pregnant Olympian, after a Swedish figure skater in the early 1900′s and a German skeleton athlete in 2006.  Moore says that her pregnancy does not affect her ability to “throw rocks” just yet, although when her belly grows it just might.  Her teammates have been supportive and point out that she is young and fit, which will help her in curling competitions.

I have to wonder what her insurance company thinks about her competing in the Olympics while pregnant.  While companies like UPMC health insurance and Mercy Health Plans don’t have any rules against this, they may be taking on more risk with a pregnant customer competing in high level sports.  Moore is an alternate so she will only actually compete if one of her team members gets injured anyways.  With the Canadian women being favored to win gold in curling, Moore’s unborn baby could be the youngest team member to win a gold medal!

UPMC & Senate Health Care Bill Victory for Obama

Friday, December 25th, 2009

According to “Senate OK’s health care bill in victory for Obama,” Democrats brought President Obama an early Christmas present by passing the health care legislation.  The AP article by David Espo points out that the 60-39 vote was “strictly along party lines.”  This passage allows for the Senate and House to begin talks about this health care plan to help reduce the number of uninsured Americans and bring some control over the insurance industry.  Obama is hopeful that this health insurance reform job will be completed shortly.

What does this mean for health insurance companies like UPMC in Western Pennsylvania?  Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the likely passage of this health care reform by early next year will provide “affordability for the middle class, security for our seniors, responsibility to our children by reducing the deficit, and accountability for the insurance industry.”  Both the House and Senate bills have many facets that will need to be combined into a working system for the United States, but President Obama ensures Americans that they will only be helped by this health care reform.

UPMC Sponsors Pittsburgh Half Marathon

Friday, December 11th, 2009

UPMC Health Plan is now the title sponsor for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon, according to their press release “As Registration Numbers Climb Steadily, UPMC Health Plan Becomes Title Sponsor for Pittsburgh Half Marathon.  The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon will be run May 2, 2010.  Dick’s Sporting Goods has already signed on as the Marathon title sponsor and FedEx Ground is sponsoring the Marathon Relay.  The Marathon Race director expressed gratitude to the sponsors helping to maintain this non-profit community based event.

Early registration numbers are five times greater than last year, a sign that this could be one of the biggest Marathons that Pittsburgh has seen.  UPMC health insurance plans promote healthy living and fitness so this is a great match for sponsorship.  As the second largest insurance provider in Western Pennsylvania, UPMC Health Plan can influence a lot of people to live a healthier lifestyle.  Training for a half marathon, whether running or walking, is a great way to do just that.
